Benefits

"Undertaken from birth and a benefit for life"

  • The optimal age to start babies is between 3 and 12 months old, although it is never too late.
  • Water has a calming effect on babies.
  • Those who have been exercised in water from an early age are comfortable and relaxed in water creating a lifelong love of water.
  • Before babies can crawl swimming may be the only cardiovascular exercise they do.
  • Exercise in the water will build your baby's heart, lung and respiratory systems.
  • The first three years of a baby's life are the most impressionable.
  • Learning to swim helps improve your child's co-ordination, strength, cognitive and motor skills.
  • Exercising your child in the water aids a sound nights sleep.
  • Swimming with your child is a unique bonding experience, not only will you watch your child progress; you too will learn the correct techniques to help develop your child's swimming skills.
  • All babies will be able to swim a short distance unaided under water within a few weeks. In order to swim on the surface of the water a child needs strength and co-ordination to lift their head and breath. This should be possible between the age of 2 to 3 years.

Give your child a head start
The National Curriculum requires that all children be taught to swim and schools have a responsibility to ensure that children can reach specific targets, including swimming 25 metres unaided, by the time they are 11 years old. A survey carried out in 2000 by the Times educational supplement found that thousands of 11 year olds did not achieve this basic standard. By introducing swimming at an early age many toddlers will swim 5 metres unaided before they are 3 years old.

Advice from the BBC

  • Knowing how to swim greatly reduces the risk of drowning – one of the commonest causes of accidental death in young people.
  • Start your children swimming at an early age – most people recommend lessons once they can walk, but you can get them in the pool as soon as they are immunised.
  • Get expert instruction.
